A curse uttered in the extremity of terror and death can reverberate for centuries. When the means to bring that curse to fruition are suddenly within reach, the innocents must look to their past to protect their future ... and their past wants no part of it.

Richard Lucas has been plagued by vivid and disturbing dreams since the death of his wife eleven years ago, and, desperate to get his life back on track, he is persuaded by his best friend Dean to take a sabbatical. But when he arrives in Dean’s home village of Lynher Mill he discovers that, not only is Dean not who he seems, but that he himself is bound more tightly to the Cornish moorlands than he could have imagined. And far more deeply than he would ever want to be.

As the events that began to shape his life over three thousand years ago continue their steady, unstoppable march towards a terrifying conclusion, Richard discovers the truth about his connection to the moor, and eventually has to do battle with his own history just to survive. Those who love him struggle with conflicting loyalties and come to realise that, if the land itself is to endure, they must make some devastating decisions.

The Dust of Ancients The Lynher Mill Chronicles Book 1 eBook Terri Nixon

** spoiler alert ** Very close to an urban fantasy, perhaps I should call it a rural fantasy, or better yet a Cornish or moorlandish fantasy, it takes place in our own world of today yet adds a layer to reality in the form of a hidden world inhabited by creatures from local folklore. This book tells the story of what happens when that world and our own collide.

I enjoyed this story, even though the genre isn't my cup of tea. I liked the language, style and characters, and also the font, it's all easy on the eyes. For the first 100 pages I had some trouble keeping a "who's who" - we get introduced to many characters (though granted, nothing close to what a George R.R. Martin book avalanches onto us) and I'm ashamed to admit I mixed up some first and last names in my head (at one time I thought "Lucas" was a new character, only to realize, later on and shame-faced, it was simply Richard's last name). It also didn't help that the faery folk had the habit of "possessing" humans (a process I'm also sorry to admit I didn't fully grasp and probably understood wrong all through the book) and thus constantly went about with TWO names.

For me, this is mostly a story of friendship, the relationship between Richard and Maer/Dean. I loved how we see them grow up together. It's also a story of family, and I loved the dynamic between Laura and Tom Riley. And of course a story of love - lost as well as gained.

For that first 100 pages, I didn't think I would be curious enough to go read books two and three when they are published, but now I'm happy to say, thanks to the blurbs in the back of this book and also of course because of the excellent ending, I'm actually sad this story is over for now and I can't wait to see what happens next to these lovely characters.

Normally, a story like this would probably get 3,5 stars from me, but since I know the author I'm giving it an extra half ;) Way to go, Terri! (And I've also got "Maid of Oaklands Manor" lined up on my Kindle, which I'm sure is a far different type of story, lol!)

The Dust of Ancients The Lynher Mill Chronicles Book 1 eBook Terri Nixon Reviews

I read Dust of the Ancients when it was still in manuscript form on the website Authonomy. It is an exciting and fast moving story well written and well worth the time to sit down and become a part of its excitement. Highly recommended and 5 stars.

"Ms Nixon’s entire concept is something a little different, and most refreshing."
I just started reading this book, but I wanted to leave it a review ASAP.

From the first four chapters, "The Dust of Ancients" is a fantasy story that crosses the time. The Prologue recollects the demise of Leon, one of the elementals, as a result of mingling with the humans. Yet the humans are only powerless tools in the hands of the supernaturals. Leon comes through as rash and quick to anger, but in his own way loving and very loyal to those emotionally close to him, including the humans. It is his foolishness that leads to his death not evilness. One cannot help herself to feel regret being killed, despite his shortcomings. I found the mentality of that ancient time, with its fear of gods, well captured and skillfully presented in vivid images.

Chapter one transports the reader to the present time where we meet two teenage siblings, Laura and Tom. While playing in the tunnels of the moor, they encounter several creatures so outlandish that in hindsight, the events seem nothing but a bad dream. During this episode, they stumble upon the ashes of the long-dead Leon, and inadvertently free him back into this world. The elemental jumps into the boy’s body, his soul lurking somewhere just below Tom’s consciousness.

In Chapter two, we meet the main character of this story, Richard. At the time he is only a boy of fifteen, with a sad family history and a secret not even he is aware of. It is because of this secret that Dean is sent to protect him. Who is Dean? I’ll let you read to learn his own secret. We didn’t get to know much about Richard, but this chapter prepared the scene for a strong personality and likable character.

In Chapter three the story returns to Tom and his sister. Leon’s mental hold of the boy is stronger and stronger. At times, Leon’s appears to be the antagonist, with his almost irrational bouts of anger. Then, he reverts at a charismatic ghostly presence, regretful of the harm he does. I liked Leon very much—his torment between his incensed personality and his innate loyalty.

This story promises adventure and unexpected written in a lavish prose.
Disappointed with this book after reading the Oakland Manor series. Could not relate to the characters - just not enough depth. Struggled to finish this book
Wonderfully written ... and an amazing read. Terri Nixon did a remarkable job of storytelling. Can't wait for her next book!
This book was great! The worldbuilding, mythology, and characters were all very well executed. I found myself caring deeply about what happened to the characters. They were, despite their unusual origins, quite believable. I borrowed this one and will be purchasing the rest.
I docked it one star because there were a few spots that could have used a bit more editing, which pulled me out of the story. But it was so good I got pulled right back in!
As a native of the South-West peninsula of the UK where the events of this book were set, I was intrigued...so I bought it and couldn't put it down!
It is one of those books whose storyline pulls you in and at three in the morning when you know you really should put out the light and sleep, you say to yourself, one more chapter, just one more...
